About Carefree Dental Clinic

Barry Saltman, MD and his wife Suzanne, a nurse practitioner, founded a non-profit medical clinic in 2003 upon retirement to care for a few dozen patients without insurance. After seeing hundreds of patients in need, they quickly realized that a large number of those patients’ health problems were due to lack of dental care.  

Dr. Saltman and John Brewster, DDS began developing plans for a dental clinic in the fall of 2006. After a lot of hard work, enough donations and grants were secured to begin work on a dental clinic to complement the medical clinic.  

CareFree Medical purchased its current building on S. Pennsylvania in Lansing and began renovating the lower level for the dental clinic in the Spring of 2007. CareFree Medical has been generous in allowing us the support and framework needed to make the clinic viable. In August 2007, we announced the opening of the CareFree Dental Clinic.

The clinic received initial grants from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Delta Dental Plan of Michigan, the City of Lansing and many private donations. Many local dentists donated equipment and supplies. We would especially like to thank:

• Andy Mosser and Tom Jackson of the IBEW Local 665 for all the electrical supplies and labor.
• John Riley and the plumbers of the Plumbers & Pipefitters Local 333 for their time and materials.
• And countless others who donated their time, expertise, equipment and hearts.

This clinic has truly been a community effort. The people of greater Lansing thank all those who already have volunteered and encourage those who are considering becoming a volunteer to help provide a place for much-needed dental treatment
